On Friday I saw Mofro and The JCs play at the Marquee Theater in 5 Points. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've included a few of my favorite photos in this post but you can see all the pictures here.
The opening act, The JCs, blew me away with their pure soul music and a singer who rivaled what I have seen of James Brown. Later that night I was really let down that their CDs had all been sold out from the t-shirt stand, but that's a testament to the kind of show they put on.
When Mofro took the stage you could tell they didn't give a damn about acting or looking like stars. It was all about the music. Singer JJ Grey was dressed like he might be there to change your oil, but instead he shook the theater with his soulful vocals. Mofro played a tasty hybrid of various styles ranging from blues to funk, even making a detour into dancehall-style reggae. I've been a fan of their CD for a while now but I had no idea how good they would be live.
The night ended with both bands onstage together for a jam session that had the place shaking. The show, which started at 10 PM, lasted until 2:30 in the morning. I don't think there is a better way to spend ten bucks on this planet that watching a blistering 4 and a half hour concert like this one. If you have a chance to see Mofro or the JCs in your town you owe it to yourself to experience them live.
Glad you enjoyed them. When will they play here again?
